For a long time I have said that we’re about to find out what happens if we elect an internet troll for president, but I think this might be actually worse than I thought. Surely, as president, Trump would have some respect for the office, or at least have advisers to reign him in. But this is every bit as bad as electing an internet troll so far.
If your child taunted someone he had just beaten, you would scold him, but here is Trump saying “Happy New Year to all, including to my many enemies and those who have fought me and lost so badly they just don’t know what to do. Love!” Bad enough to do this after a regular victory, but to do so in the circumstances he did is all the more immature.
But we knew Trump was an immature asshole all along. Even many of his voters knew this. So why is this a big deal now? Because now we’re starting to see the consequences.
1st is America’s “soft leadership” around the world. This is about how we get other countries to do what we want them to do without the threat or use of force or coercion.
2nd is the behavior of our enemies. Most of the worst dictators in the world remain in power through propaganda. For years, Middle Eastern dictators blamed the USA for their problems. Regardless of what you think of Obama’s foreign policy, his approach made that impossible for them, and many people say a key ingredient for the Arab Spring uprising was this approach. Trump, on the other hand, is propaganda gold. How will we possibly condemn other countries for torture or corruption when we have so many issues ourselves? And even if we did, it would carry zero force. This emboldens our enemies greatly.
Lastly, and by far most importantly, is that Trump’s childish insecurity means he doesn’t make rational or well-informed decisions. We’ve already seen this multiple times, but perhaps most glaring is his decision to not only discount but to openly disparage our own intelligence agencies after they claimed Russian interference in the election. How is he supposed to work with our intelligence to keep us safe?
Remember when the Dixie Chicks sided against George W Bush at an overseas and effectively ended their singing careers? Trump and his surrogates have openly sided with Russia over their own country’s opposition party. Seriously!!!!! Think about that. Not just another country but one of our longest foes and sometimes enemy. Can you imagine if Bush had imposed sanctions on Cuba and Obama promising to reverse them, saying “Great move by Fidel Castro, I always knew he was a smart guy”? Trump does so many ridiculous things a day the press doesn’t know how to cover something like this.
What’s more is that in doing so they have intentionally politicized the basic functioning of our government. Giuliani has been making the rounds saying that all intelligence collected under Obama should be questioned, calling it “incompetent and politicized.” This is from the leading candidate to be the National Intelligence Director!!!
This is holy shit stuff, and the real danger here is that Trump is just so ridiculous and does so many things that are unthinkable that it stops even making headlines or getting a rise out of his opponents.
I know where you are right now. I don’t want to read anything more about Trump. I still haven’t watched any comedy politics shows since the election. It hurts, genuinely. And I don’t want to seek out more of that. But at some point we have to get back on the horse. Because if we don’t, we’ll get more conservative ideology “crammed down our throats” as the GOP likes to say, and we’ll risk ANOTHER four years of this ridiculous child.
And if nothing else, our opposition sends a signal to the rest of the world that the US is still a country of reason, and when Trump is gone, not all will be lost.
More to come…
